Statement from Cambridge Indivisible on Senator Angela Alsobrooks’ Vote to Advance Crypto-Friendly Legislation

Cambridge, MD, May 20, 2025 - As co-founders and co-chairs of Cambridge Indivisible, we are releasing the following statement to express our deep concern over Senator Angela Alsobrooks’ recent vote to advance legislation that would benefit the crypto industry and ultimately enable Donald Trump’s corruption. We believe it is vital for constituents to speak out when elected officials—especially Democrats—make choices that undermine the fight against authoritarianism. There is no compromising with fascism. Ever.

Dear Senator Alsobrooks,

We are writing as the co-founders and co-chairs of Cambridge Indivisible, a grassroots pro-democracy group representing over 1,000 engaged residents of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

We are deeply disappointed in your vote to advance a crypto-friendly bill that will help legitimize a new channel for Donald Trump to accept bribes from billionaires and foreign governments. This vote sends the wrong message at the wrong time.

Let us be clear: cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology do need thoughtful, transparent, and forward-looking regulation. But the bill you voted to advance is far too industry-friendly. It prioritizes legitimizing the stablecoin market without putting in place the necessary oversight to prevent abuse—particularly by a former and potentially future president who is openly attempting to enrich himself and evade accountability.

Senator Elizabeth Warren put it best:

“A bill that turbocharges the stablecoin market, while facilitating the President’s corruption and undermining national security, financial stability, and consumer protection is worse than no bill at all…. But we cannot allow that corruption to blind us to the broader reality: blockchain technology is here to stay.”

This isn’t a matter of differing opinions on complex policy. This is about choosing whether or not to enable authoritarianism. There is no compromising with fascism—ever. Votes like this one normalize corruption, feed cynicism about the Democratic Party, and ultimately aid Trump’s efforts to dismantle our democracy for personal gain.

We expect our Democratic leaders to be a united front against all forms of Trump’s authoritarianism—including his self-enrichment schemes. Instead, this vote signaled to the public that corporate access and crypto industry lobbying outweigh the urgent need to protect democratic norms.

We understand there is room for healthy disagreement within a big-tent party. But there can be no disagreement when it comes to standing firmly against a would-be dictator and his corrupt cronies. That is a moral line, not a political one.

We urge you to publicly reconsider your support for this bill and make it clear to your constituents that you will not aid Trump’s corruption or legitimize the industries that facilitate it without strong, enforceable safeguards.

We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you or your staff further.

Sincerely,

Michelle and Andy Fowle
