Statement from Cambridge Indivisible on Rep. Andy Harris’s Vote for H.R. 1
Today, Andy Harris voted to gut health care, slash food assistance, defund clean energy, and devastate rural hospitals. H.R. 1, the so-called ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ is nothing short of a cruel betrayal of the people of Maryland’s 1st District.
Let’s be clear: this bill doesn’t eliminate ‘waste and fraud.’ It eliminates working people’s lifelines. It rips Medicaid away from thousands of families, imposes harsh work requirements that make it harder—not easier—for people to stay covered, and slashes food assistance even as prices continue to rise.
What does Harris call that? Fiscal responsibility. What do we call it? Theft. He is robbing working families to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.
In a district where hospital closures have already strained rural care, this bill puts more pressure on our local health systems by stripping funding, cutting services, and leaving thousands uninsured. It weakens clean energy investments that could bring down utility bills and grow jobs here on the Shore. It turns its back on our seniors, veterans, and children in order to boost Wall Street’s bottom line.
Andy Harris wants to pretend he’s draining the swamp. But what he’s really doing is draining our communities of the resources we need to survive and thrive.
He will be held accountable—not just by watchdogs in Washington, but by the people right here in Cambridge, Easton, Salisbury, Chestertown, and across MD-01. We are watching. We are organizing. And we will remind our neighbors—again and again—exactly who voted to take food off their tables and care out of their reach.
We don’t need a representative who protects the ultra-wealthy. We need one who fights for working families. Andy Harris made his choice today. In 2026 and beyond, we’ll make ours.
