SALISBURY, MD — November 7, 2025 Residents from across Maryland’s Eastern Shore came together outside Congressman Andy Harris’ Salisbury office on Thursday, November 7th, for a Community Over Cruelty Food Drive that turned frustration into action and compassion into results.

In just two hours, volunteers collected more than 653 pounds of food along with cash donations from passersby. All proceeds were delivered the same day to the Maryland Food Bank – Eastern Shore Branch in Salisbury.

The event was organized by Cambridge Indivisible, with support from Shore Progress, the Talbot Democratic Forum, the Dorchester Democratic Central Committee.

“When power turns its back, love steps forward,” said Michelle Fowle of Cambridge Indivisible. “On the Shore, we don’t wait for permission to care — we just show up for each other. When Andy and Trump dump you because they no longer need you, your community carries you.”

The Community Over Cruelty drive came amid growing hardship across the country, as the Trump administration continues to delay full SNAP benefits despite court orders to release them. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are refusing to negotiate — holding the government, and millions of working families, hostage unless Democrats agree to eliminate Affordable Care Act subsidies that help keep health coverage affordable.

“This wasn’t just a food drive,” Fowle added. “It was a statement about who we are as a community — we choose compassion over cruelty, care over neglect, and each other over everything else.”

Residents can continue to support local families by donating directly to the Maryland Food Bank – Eastern Shore Branch at https://mdfoodbank.org/about/locations/eastern-shore-branch/. Monetary donations are accepted online, and a list of most-needed items is available for in-person drop-offs.
